SUMMARY:NASC Volunteer Opportunity: Remove one of Michigan's top 20 invaders
DESCRIPTION:In Parkview Hills\, Honeysuckle is robust along some of our trails. Join us on Saturday\, November 16\, 9:30 am to noon to remove this invader from our natural areas. We will gather at the Clubhouse at 9:30 for a brief tutorial on Honeysuckle identification and removal. We will then head into the natural area along the trail in teams to cut Honeysuckle\, treat the stumps with herbicide\, and stack the cut stems along the trail. At a later date\, the stems will be chipped and the chips will be spread on the trail surface\, thereby turning an invader into a resource for our trails. \nLike many invasive species\, Honeysuckle was imported from Eurasia and Japan in the 19th century as a landscaping and garden shrub. In forested or wooded natural areas like Parkview Hills’\, it quickly throws off the balance of nature\, forming dense stands of 6-16 foot shrubs that crowd out native plants and reduce food and reproduction resources for songbirds\, butterflies\, and other insects. As one of Michigan’s Top 20 invasive plants\, Honeysuckle\, in particular\, upsets the balance of plants\, insects\, and birds in an ecosystem. Not only does it discourage our native plants\, but its foliage is unpalatable to most native insects. Songbirds especially rely on insects to feed their young. Where Honeysuckle thrives\, native songbirds and pollinators do not. \nIf it rains\, we will reschedule. Questions? Contact Vaughn Maatman\, chair of PH Natural Areas Stewardship Committee\, at maatmanv@gmail.com

SUMMARY:NASC Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Natural Areas Stewardship Committee and other volunteers from 12:30-3 pm in removing invasive Honeysuckle along the trail in our woods. We will meet at the Clubhouse at 12:30 pm for a brief tutorial on Honeysuckle removal and to distribute gloves and tools\, and then head out for work until 3 pm. This is important work in restoring the native plants and wildflowers that used to populate our woods – and can again! The work is not strenuous\, there are several jobs to fit different ability levels\, and it makes a real difference in our natural environment. Get outdoors\, meet interesting people\, and restore our native woods. \nLocation: Parkview Hills Willow Lake Clubhouse\, then trails

SUMMARY:2026 Garlic Mustard Pull
DESCRIPTION:Garlic mustard pull season kickoff on Saturday\, April 25 at 10am \nOnce again\, Parkview Hills is inviting community members to join the Natural Areas Stewardship Committee in our annual Spring Garlic Mustard Pull campaign. Please join us on Saturday April 25 at 10am in the clubhouse parking lot for coffee and donut holes. \nHere\, you can meet like-minded community members and learn how to identify and pull garlic mustard. If you have time\, hit the trails with friends old and new after the social. We will pull garlic mustard for the next 4-6 weeks. We hope you will\, too. We will be out as a group every Saturday at 10am through May. Watch for weekly announcements on locations. Garlic mustard is an aggressive\, invasive plant growing in our natural areas\, yards\, and gardens. Wildlife do not eat garlic mustard. Our native flowers\, like Trillium and Jack-in-the-Pulpit\, will proliferate when not crowded out by garlic mustard. \n  \nHere is how to pull garlic mustard in three simple steps: \nWalk the trails and look for the garlic mustard signs along the trail. Grab a bag from the station or bring your own. Pulling garlic mustard is easy! Low and slow is the key. Pull the plant from the roots and put the flowering ends deep into your bag. You can stop hundreds of new garlic mustard plants from growing by removing one plant. Remember to tie the bag shut when you finish so the seeds do not escape. Leave the bag on the side of the trail or next to one of the garlic mustard pull stations for collection and counting. The clubhouse staff will count\, collect\, and dispose of the filled bags.
